What: Dish Calm is waterman’s slang for calm water. It’s the name of this picture perfect, year-round getaway cottage, built by designer/builder David Sutphen for his own use. Solidly constructed (40-year architect grade roof shingles, top of the line double-hung windows), with delightful architectural details throughout, it fits right in, both size-wise and looks-wise, to this charming little town, but it offers a big step up from the usual shore cottage. A nice sized master bedroom and a second bedroom are upstairs, along with the sleeping lofts, guaranteed to wow any kid worth his/her salt. Where: Neavitt is in Talbot County, Maryland, two hours from Baltimore, and about 12 minutes from St. Michaels. It’s an old town, inhabited by Eastern shore watermen, other locals and summer folk. Traditions are intact – there’s a 4th of July and a Labor Day party that everyone turns out for, as well as the New Year’s Eve Crab Drop. The soltice bonfires in the spring and fall are evocative — worth a trip on their own. Nearest restaurants and groceries are in St. Michaels, home to the renowned Inn At Perry Cabin. Bigger shopping expeditions are to Easton, about a half hour away. Neavitt itself is on a spit of land at the very end of a peninsula – you don’t get here by accident – and there’s water, water, everywhere.
Why: It’s a world away – slow paced and quiet. If you can’t wind down here, you may as well throw in the towel.
Why Not: Too far from the nearest 12-plex.
Would Suit: Water rats.
NB: It’s a village house. Kayaking and canoeing are possible from the back, but nearest deep water slip is at the Neavitt landing or Duck Cove, which is private.
