Loch Raven High School was placed on lockdown late this morning after a school resource officer approached a 14-year-old student believed to be carrying a gun in their backpack, county authorities said.
After searching the building “systematically,” police detained the student and recovered a pellet gun, Ofc. Jennifer Peach, a public information officer with the Baltimore County Police Department, wrote in an email. The student is being held on pending charges. No injuries were reported.
When the resource officer approached the student, the student ran to a different part of the school. The student ran out of sight, initiating the lockdown.
The lockdown was lifted about 12:30 p.m.
Parents are instructed to go to Rock City Church at 1607 Cromwell Bridge Road the parking lot of The Big Screen Store (formerly Luskin’s) at 1125 Cromwell Bridge Road to pick up their children.
The incident comes one day after a mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla., resulting in 17 deaths. A white nationalist militia leader has since confirmed the suspected shooter was part of his group.
“Proper protocol was followed for this incident, which we routinely practice so that we are prepared for these types of incidents, and no one was injured,” wrote Peach. “Yesterday’s tragic events in Florida had no influence on our response to this situation today.”
In an unrelated incident, a Pimlico Elementary/Middle School student was taken away by Baltimore City Public Schools police after they were found to have a BB gun.
